Yes, it feels like the contest has been toned down this year. I am more than happy with that. Last year sucked out all any fun.
I don't think Shanahan cares about winning the award based on his Top 5s in Thrasher. The FDR footage was cool. I'm a big fan and thought he should have won it last year before the Tyshawn parts dropped. I like that he's a fresh guy who does throw in some quality park clips.
I think the first two SOTYs were actually done by reader's vote. Cards was the first one by vibes. I'd say advertising dollars bought at least one SOTY.
Why does everybody hate on Senn? He rips. Him winning made sense at the time.
I agree that skateboarding would benefit from another voice or two. I prefer sitting down and reading a physical object, but I never have the time. Work is too busy right now to weigh in print media.
